Art: a Biblical

Definition and Purpose

by Jane Raymond

“Not just another art book!”
If God created all things, didn’t He also create the arts? And if so, what does He have to say about it? In this book, author Jane Raymond shares insight into the organic definition and purposes for “art” as revealed in Scripture, and why creative Christians should not avoid the world of the arts but rather overcome it.

I learned a bunch, and I think you will as well.”

Is There a Biblical Definition of Art? Ep. 208″, October 24, 2022

Contrary to popular belief, the subject of art is not silent in the Bible.

As a matter of fact, the entire Bible is a work of art in and of itself. It is literature, poetry, narratives, and also visual arts as it stimulates our imaginations.

The general attitude Christians have toward the arts tends to be confusion. Because this subject can be difficult to define and understand Biblically, Christians usually learn about it from the world’s definitions and examples. But is this the truth? Is art really what we learn from the world? Christians have an important role to play in the art world, but many avoid getting involved with the subject because they naturally assume it to be a worldly venture. If God created all things, didn’t He also create the arts? And if so, what does He have to say about it?

With many Biblical references, Art: A Biblical Definition and Purpose endeavors to go to the root of Christian thought about art as it digs into the word definition, as well as shares examples and purposes of God’s own artwork exampled in His Word and displayed throughout creation.

Art: A Biblical Definition and Purpose also offers a brief overview of art history, the effects of art upon the culture, Biblical insight to the Christian artist, as well as other useful insights for the creative Christian. It also has an attached art history timeline at the back inside cover.

This book is a great resource for any creative Christian who strives to make a difference in the world for Christ by encouraging the confidence necessary to stand for righteousness as they work their trades in whatever they have been gifted. Art: A Biblical Definition and Purpose has clearly demonstrated that God has much to say on the subject of art if we search out and explore His Word as He commands us to do.
